A LOOK BACK: 2005 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

After a torrid season battle between five of the toughest and most talented sprint car drivers in the nation, Levi Jones emerged with his first career USAC title, taking the National Sprint Car Series championship by 13 points over Dave Darland.

Jones won five times and held off Darland’s late-season charge that included two of the highest-paying victories of the season over the final four races.

The seesaw battle began almost immediately as Jay Drake set out to defend his 2004 title.  Jones and Darland quickly joined him, and the trio took turns at the point through June.

The highly-anticipated “Indiana Sprint Week” saw the lead change three consecutive nights, and on the final night, Jones snatched the lead back for good.  He stretched that lead to over 80 points heading into the West Coast swing at Perris Auto Speedway and Manzanita Speedway.

Jones crashed heavily during one of the preliminary Perris nights and his lead dwindled to the teens after the Saturday night feature.  But he maintained his composure and finished right behind or right ahead of Darland in each of the three Manzanita features to keep his lead.  Darland, who won $40,000-plus over the final two weeks, was 13 points short of his second series title.  Bud Kaeding finished third, while Drake and Josh Wise finished fourth and fifth in the standings.

Of Jones’s five victories, three came at the Terre Haute Action Track.  Darland finished the season with four victories, while Drake and Cory Kruseman won three times each.  Kruseman was the “Indiana Sprint Week” champion.

Damion Gardner won twice, as did Rob Chaney, Bobby East, Tracy Hines and Dave Steele.

Jerry Coons, Jr., Darren Hagen, Ron Gregory, Brian Tyler, Dickie Gaines, Kevin Huntley, Bud Kaeding, Michael Lewis and Mat Neely all won once.

Eric Gordon of Indianapolis emerged from a late-race duel with Dave Steele to claim a record fifth consecutive victory in the 57th Pay Less/Remy International “Little 500” USAC Special Event Sprint Car race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.  The win was Gordon’s seventh in the nation’s richest pavement sprint car race.

Steele, who led 141 laps of the 500-lap race on the ¼-mile paved oval, blew an engine while leading on lap 461, relinquishing the lead to Gordon, who led the final 39 laps in his Pay Less/Print Express Competition Welding/Gaerte.

Gordon’s prize money topped $31,000 as he led 181 total laps and finished five laps ahead of race runner-up Tim Cox of Park City, Ill.  Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif. took third.

Defending USAC Western Sprint Car champ Tony Hunt led 29 laps and was running third when he lost an engine on lap 412.  Western Sprint veteran Shauna Hogg became the first lady driver in race history to lead the event, pacing 17 laps and finishing 10th.  Pole starter Tom Fedewa finished 24th, retiring from the race after 217 laps.

Tony Elliott led 32 laps but tangled with Chris Hayes on lap 255.  Elliott hit the wall and Hayes crashed into a pit barrier, suffering a minor knee injury.  Hayes was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Anderson for treatment.
