CRA SPRINTS SLIDE INTO SANTA MARIA FRIDAY, PERRIS SATURDAY
Brody Roa leads the USAC/CRA AMSOIL Sprint Cars into a pair of races this weekend. He takes a two-point lead over Richard Vander Weerd into Friday’s race at Santa Maria Raceway. Saturday brings the “Budweiser Firecracker 30 & Sky Concert” at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.
Friday’s race will be the 2016 series debut at Santa Maria, while four different drivers have prevailed in this year’s Perris outings. They include Richard Vander Weerd, Austin Williams, Bryan Clauson and Josh Hodges.
Last year’s Santa Maria CRA races went to Rickie Gaunt and Ryan Bernal. Gaunt’s win came in his final career start and was his lone victory in 2016 while Bernal has spent most of this year attending fireman training.
Jake Swanson holds down third in the latest standings, just 19 points out of the lead, while five-time series champ Mike Spencer sits in fourth with a 34-point deficit.
Three-time defending series champion Damion Gardner has rebounded to score four consecutive “top-five” finishes and is seeking his first 2016 victory this weekend. He is fifth in points, only 44 behind Roa.
