HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS SET TO COMPETE AT IMS IN MAY!
Last year Purdue University and the United States Auto Club partnered to host the annual evGrandPrix event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event looks to expand in 2015 by including two new divisions aside from the collegiate evGrandPrix class. A national collegiate gas grandprix and a high school evgranprix will join the annually ran evGrandPrix event at IMS this May in the newly formed Student Karting World Finals.
The Student Karting World Finals will be open to any high school in the state of Indiana in 2015 as well as any college or university nation wide. The Purdue Electric Vehicle Grand Prix was launched in 2010 as part of Purdue’s electric vehicle initiative. Purdue partnered with the leading technical universities and colleges in Indiana to establish a program to educate and train the workforce needed to design, manufacture, and maintain advanced electrical vehicles. The GrandPrix is more than just a race, it represents the opportunity to change a generation. The purpose of this event is to accelerate innovation through education. Using electric powered go-karts, it inspires college students to commit their creative energies to develop future electrical vehicle technologies.
The winner of this event is the team that best blends kart design, battery efficiency, community outreach, and race placement in the 50 lap event. Electric motors and lithium-ion batteries will power the karts. Spec tires will be provided for each kart at the event.
The National Collegiate Gas GrandPrix puts academic and racing skills to the test. The inaugural running of the competition will be held in conjunction with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in May 2016 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race will use a “Spec” racing motor kit and chassis that will cost under $4,000 for each participating university. The Margay K3 will be the spec chassis and the Briggs and Stratton LO 206 will operate as the spec engine platform for the event. Spec tires will also be provided for all karts.
The first ever High School evGrandPrix event will also take place at IMS during the Student Karting World Finals in 2016. The national high school evGrandPrix will include karts that have the following characteristics: propelled by electric motors, lead-acid batteries, as well as spec tires. Purdue University, the United States Auto Club, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, are excited to showcase how the M-STEM program is a great way to engage our young people to pursue the science, technology, and math skills they will need for the future.
