THE THUNDER RETURNS: USAC MIDWEST THUNDER SPEED2 MIDGETS SET FOR 28 DATES IN 2023
Speedway, Indiana (February 21, 2023)………The 2023 schedule for the USAC SpeeD2 Midwest Thunder Midgets presented by Performance Electronics, Ltd. will contain 28 races, incorporating 11 dirt tracks in the states of Indiana and Ohio.
Multiple tracks are still finalizing dates for possible additions to the series schedule in 2023.
Among the newest additions to the schedule are the series’ first ever visit to Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway on May 20. On July 20-21, the Midwest Thunder series will serve as the support division for back-to-back Indiana Sprint Week dates at Gas City I-69 Speedway and Kokomo Speedway, respectively.
Two traditional highlights returning to the season’s schedule are the Mike Streicher Memorial on May 12 at Ohio’s Limaland Motorsports Park as well as the Jack Hewitt Classic on July 3 at Ohio’s Waynesfield Raceway Park. Added to the list of events honoring racing greats, the series makes its first visit to Paragon (Ind.) Speedway on July 15 for the Leon Gentry Memorial.
Indianapolis, Indiana’s Circle City Raceway, which has been the scene for some of the club's closest finishes, will host three dates in 2023, including as support of the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship on May 25 and September 15, and will headline a Labor Day Weekend date on September 2.
Indiana’s Montpelier Motor Speedway, the original home of the USAC SpeeD2 Midwest Thunder Midgets, returns to the slate with six “Thunder Nights” where the SpeeD2 midgets are the headliners while one date will support the Steel Black Nationals.
Ohio’s Moler Raceway Park has become a favorite stop of the series in recent years and expands its partnership in the coming year with a series of three Open Wheel Nights. Moler will also feature the SpeeD2 Midgets on July 14 while two of the Moler races will be partnered with Atomic Speedway, giving Southern Ohio race fans a Friday/Saturday doubleheader on June 2-3 and again on August 4-5.
USAC MTM is back at Ohio’s Fremont Speedway on June 17, which is tentatively partnered with a yet to be announced nearby track and will provide a Friday/Saturday northern Ohio swing.
The offseason has brought news of a number of new series members, which is expected to grow the ranks of entrants, which averaged 23 cars per race in 2022. Series points champion Stratton Briggs will return to defend his title against the likes of Bryce Massingill, Michael Magic, Ian Creager, Carl Peterson, Josh Yenser, Jakeb Boxell, Zach Wigal, Abby Hohlbein and Jim Jones.
Additionally, the series has secured support for its points fund as well as contingency awards for heat race winners, hard chargers, Precision Move of the Race, Quick Time and Hard Luck at each race event.
